    Description

This flute has a surface crack (hole 4) and so the price is dramatically reduced. It has the tone character and color of the Meiji Era, the older brown urushi varnish inside being in excellent condition.

The Flute does not require any change to the internal bore, so it maintains its historic sound.
It is perfectly playable but will need a preventative binding on the outside.

Good intonation with relatively small holes. There are seven distinct bamboo nodes as is traditional and has a gently curved outer shape terminating in a triple node root end. (decorative features that do not affect the sound) This instrument is suitable for both Zen meditation and traditional Japanese chamber music. The Chi is not sharp, as was common for many flutes from this time. (my personal Flute included)
The madake bamboo is light colored. 352 grams. 21.5 inches long.(54.4cm). Tuning is in D, the most common length for traditional Japanese music. 1.8 shaku.
The flute will be shipped in a airtight package with some moisture to prevent cracking during shipping. All bamboo shakuhachis require a humid environment since Japan has a humid climate. Nevertheless this Flute is in fine playable condition after 100 years.
