    Item Description: this is a wonderful Rare Early Nigerian Ogoni Karikpo antelope mask 22'' from prominent estate. In ownership of a retired archaeologist who studied African cultures in the 1950s and 60s. A similar yet smaller mask was recently displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.    Other works in his collection will be auctioned of in our African Mask auction.     The Ogoni are a distinctive people, numbering around 850,000, in the
    Niger Delta region of the modern-day nation-state of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They have a distinct culture, language, and history, and have traditional religious and political systems that differ even from their closest neighbors.
