    Description

Hand carved from one solid piece of wood. Stained with a native darker color in areas such as around the face using an unknown substance (perhaps crushed seeds). Slits for eyes for use during ceremonies. Whitewashing of the face area commonly done in Gabon. Rustic looking but with ordinary chipping of the whitewashing which often occur with old wood. Estimated to have been made some time in the late 1800's. 2 holes carved into its back for hanging when not used for ceremonies. Excellent condition. Used for ceremonial purposes. Measures 12 1/2" long x 9 1/2" wide.
A Punu-Lumbo mask is a tribal mask native to the Ogooué River basin in Gabon, especially in the south in Ngounié Province.
