    Description

AC Gilbert American Flyer 720A Remote Operating switches. This particular set of switches is in Ex plus condition and were made in March of 1950. The original inspection paper is stamped March 17, 1950, St Patrick's day of all things. These switches look barely used, great shape, screws and bottom plates are shiny like a mirror.  The box is in decent shape, crisp corners but one side has a split. Comes with all the inserts, a very hard to find extra. Comes with the original packing inspection slip and the original instruction sheet. These bulbs are are the original bulbs, the switch was tested for continuity.
These switches are just an amazing piece of engineering for a vintage item.  Most people have no clue how complicated their design is.  To operate properly, the frog has to change which rail energizes it, and this is done by a series of contacts underneath that carry the current to the isolated frog.  The switch motor also has a light, which changes from green to red when the switch is "bent".  They work in conjunction with the switch controller, whose 4 bulbs show red or green as well indicating which direction the switch is positioned.  There is even a slide switch that allows a siding to be used as a dead siding until the frog is thrown in that direction, allowing multiple trains on a layout to come out of sidings onto a mainline.  I mention all this not only because of their wonderful engineering, but age and poor storage conditions can cause corrosion and that it can also lead to a whole host of problems.  Switches from B&B Antique trains have been taken apart completely, and all contact points, cleaned, new wires installed when needed, and all continuity points checked for proper electrical operation.  The controllers were gone over completely, years of use can cause arcing on the contact points, and each one was gone over thoroughly, and contacts cleaned. You can find some lower priced switches, where a person says "they work", but 99% of the time they haven't been serviced properly.  They put current to the switch motor, and the motor works, but when you buy them, and the engine comes to a halt going through the switch, or slows down greatly, then you didn't buy one of our switches. All of our switches are thoroughly metered to check for full conductivity, and any issues addressed. We offer a full one year warranty, so you can buy from us with confidence.  These will work as they are supposed to.  There are shipping discounts for multiple purchases.  Also, if shipping zone is closer to PA, I will send in a box different than a flat rate and refund you excess. I try and save customers whenever I can, large flat rate boxes are cheaper to west coast, other boxes less to east and mid west. Have always done this for my customers.
